Bats are the only mammals capable of true powered flight, and with over 1,400 species they make up about a fifth of all mammal species, found everywhere except the polar regions. Most navigate and hunt insects by echolocation, a single bat can eat thousands of insects in a night, and fruit bats pollinate crops including durian and agave. Around a fifth of bat species are threatened, and in North America white-nose syndrome has killed millions since 2006.

About the Bats

Original range: Evolved in tropical regions, probably in Laurasia (northern hemisphere), now diversified globally.

Where to see Bats

  • Great Rift Valley caves, Kenya — Year-round. Caves host many bat species including horseshoe bats.
  • Philippines lowland forests — December to July. Spot giant flying foxes at dusk.

Behavior and diet

Diet: Varies by species: insects, fruit, nectar, pollen, fish, frogs, and rarely blood.

Social structure: Highly variable: solitary, small family groups, or enormous colonies (millions per roost).

Communication: Primarily acoustic: complex vocalizations, ultrasonic echolocation, some visual signaling in fruit bats.
