Chameleons are lizards found mainly in Madagascar and sub-Saharan Africa, with a few species around the Mediterranean, in India and in Sri Lanka, and Madagascar alone holds close to half of the 200 or so known species. Their eyes move independently, giving nearly 360-degree vision, and the tongue shoots out at prey faster than a sports car accelerates, reaching more than twice the body length. Colour change is mostly about temperature, mood and signalling to other chameleons rather than matching the background.

About the Chameleons

Chameleons are a family of lizards celebrated for their extraordinary color-changing abilities and other remarkable adaptations. These reptiles are found primarily in Madagascar, sub-Saharan Africa, and select parts of Asia and southern Europe. They range from the tiny Brookesia minima, scarcely as long as a paperclip, to the impressive Parson's chameleon, which can reach over half a meter in length.

Chameleons are well known for their highly specialized feet and unique eyes, both adapted for an arboreal lifestyle. Their eyes move independently, providing the ability to look in two directions at once, while their prehensile tails give them excellent grip in the trees. Color changing is used not only for camouflage but also for communicating mood, temperature, and signaling to other chameleons.

Where to see Chameleons

  • Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, Madagascar — March to May (end of rainy season). Look for chameleons basking on low branches at dawn and dusk.
  • Usambara Mountains, Tanzania — June to October (dry season). Search leaf litter and branches for native Trioceros species.
  • Arabian Peninsula mountains — October to March (cooler season). Spot veiled chameleons in lush wadis and garden areas.

Behavior and diet

Diet: Primarily insectivorous, feeding on flies, crickets, grasshoppers, moths, and occasionally small birds or other lizards.

Social structure: Largely solitary; adults may come into contact only for mating.

Communication: Color changes, body posturing, and head bobbing; little to no vocalization except for hissing when threatened.
