Snakes are legless reptiles found on every continent except Antarctica, and the roughly 4,000 species range from thread snakes barely 10 cm long to reticulated pythons over 6 metres. They swallow prey whole thanks to loosely connected jaws and smell with their forked tongues; about 600 species are venomous, of which roughly 200 are medically significant to people. Most are Least Concern, but island endemics and some sea snakes are threatened.

About the Snakes

Snakes (suborder Serpentes) are legless, elongated reptiles found across nearly every continent except Antarctica. With over 3,900 known species, they are hugely diverse in shape, size, habitat, and behavior. While many people fear snakes, majority are harmless, and only a minority possess venom capable of harming humans. Snakes have evolved unique adaptations for hunting and survival, from advanced camouflage to infrared heat-sensing pits in some species.

Snakes fill vital ecological roles as both predator and prey. They help control populations of rodents and other small animals, while also serving as food for birds, mammals, and larger reptiles. Their diversity means they can be found in deserts, rainforests, grasslands, wetlands, and even urban areas, adapting to an extraordinary variety of environments.

Habitat and range

Original range: Snakes likely originated in early Cretaceous forests and evolved to inhabit terrestrial and aquatic environments across Laurasia and Gondwana.

Current distribution: They are now found on every continent except Antarctica, inhabiting a vast range of terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Preferred environments: Rainforests, Grasslands, Deserts, Wetlands, Woodlands, Rivers and swamps, Urban and suburban areas

Where to see Snakes

  • Amazon Rainforest — Wet season (December-April). Look for anacondas and boas near rivers and marshes.
  • Florida Everglades — Spring and early summer. Spot water snakes and pythons in the wetlands.
  • Indian forests — Late spring to early summer. King cobras inhabit dense forests and bamboo thickets.
  • Australian Outback — Late autumn and early spring. Inland taipans and other unique Australian snakes are found in clay plains and arid habitats.

Behavior and diet

Diet: Most snakes are carnivorous, feeding on small mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, insects, or other reptiles; a few specialize in eating eggs or other snakes.

Social structure: Mostly solitary except during mating season or rare aggregations (hibernacula).

Communication: Snakes use body posture, hissing, pheromones, visual displays, and tail vibration to communicate.

  • Some snakes (rattlesnakes) use tail vibration as a warning signal.
  • Boas and pythons constrict prey; venomous snakes inject neurotoxins or hemotoxins.
  • Shedding skin regularly (ecdysis) allows growth and removes parasites.
