Seahorses are fish with a horse-like head, a grasping tail and a body armoured in bony plates, found in seagrass beds, mangroves and reefs in shallow temperate and tropical seas. They swim upright, driven by a small dorsal fin beating up to 35 times a second, and they are the only animals in which the male becomes pregnant, carrying the eggs in a pouch until hundreds of tiny young are released. Around 46 species are known, several of them threatened by trawling and the dried-seahorse trade.

About the Seahorses

Seahorses (genus Hippocampus) are among the ocean's most distinctive and fascinating fish, known for their upright swimming posture and horse-like head. Unlike any other fish, male seahorses experience pregnancy, carrying fertilized eggs in a brood pouch until they hatch. Possessing excellent camouflage abilities, seahorses use their prehensile tails to cling to vegetation or corals, gently swaying with the currents.

Seahorses inhabit shallow, warm, and temperate coastal waters worldwide, from the coral reefs of Southeast Asia to the seagrass beds of the Atlantic. They are highly vulnerable to habitat destruction, pollution, and the international trade for traditional medicine and aquarium collections. Despite their unique behavior and charm, most species face uncertain futures as wild populations continue to decline.

Original range: Coastal regions of the Indo-Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean; likely originated in the Indo-West Pacific.

Current distribution: Found in shallow tropical and temperate waters globally, particularly in regions with seagrass, mangroves, coral reefs, and estuaries.

Where to see Seahorses

  • Great Barrier Reef, Australia — April to November. Look in seagrass beds and shallow coral environments while snorkeling or diving.
  • Mediterranean Sea near Spain — May to September. Guided dives in seagrass meadows often spot Hippocampus guttulatus.
  • Gulf of Mexico, Florida coast — Year-round. Best seen in clear, shallow water among seagrasses.

Behavior and diet

Diet: Small crustaceans such as mysid shrimp, plankton, copepods, and fish larvae, consumed by sucking prey through their snout.

Social structure: Mostly solitary or found in loosely associated pairs; some species form short-term monogamous partnerships.

Communication: Communicate with visual cues, color changes, and by producing clicking or snapping sounds during social interactions.
