Equus
Horses were domesticated on the steppes of western Eurasia at least 4,000 years ago, and they reshaped travel, farming and warfare for millennia. They can sleep standing up thanks to a locking mechanism in their legs, and their eyes — the largest of any land mammal — give almost 360-degree vision. Przewalski's horse, the only wild horse never domesticated, was extinct in the wild by the 1960s and has since been reintroduced to Mongolia; it is listed as Endangered.

About the Horse
Horses are iconic, hoofed mammals belonging to the genus Equus, remarkable for their evolutionary adaptation to life on open grasslands. Domesticated around 5,500 years ago on the steppes of Central Asia, the partnership between humans and horses has driven civilization – from transport and agriculture, to warfare and sport. The genus Equus also includes zebras and wild asses, showcasing a broad diversity within a single lineage.
Modern domestic horses (Equus ferus caballus) are noted for their intelligence, stamina, and close relationship with humans, while wild relatives such as the endangered Przewalski’s horse represent the ancient, undomesticated lineage. Extreme selective breeding has led to over 400 unique horse breeds, from miniature ponies to massive draft horses, demonstrating an incredible range of physical and behavioral traits.

Habitat and range
Original range: Central Asia and Eurasian steppes
Current distribution: Worldwide, domestic horses are present on every continent except Antarctica. Wild relatives are limited to parts of Central Asia, Africa, and southern Africa.
Preferred environments: Grasslands, Savannas, Steppe, Open woodlands, Scrub/desert margins
Regions: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Central Asia, Southern Africa
Where to see Horse
- Hustai National Park, Mongolia — Late Spring–Early Autumn. Best reserve to view Przewalski’s horses in natural habitat.
- Serengeti, Tanzania — June–October. Plains zebra herds are easily observed during dry season.
- Outback, Australia — Year-round. Large feral horse ('brumby') populations roam the open rangelands.
Behavior and diet
Diet: Strict herbivore – grazes on grasses, hay, shrubs, and (occasionally) supplemental vegetables/fruits when managed
Social structure: Highly social; domestic horses and many wild equids form matriarchal groups (harems) with a dominant stallion, mares, and their young. Bachelor groups and solitary stallions are also common.
Communication: Vocalizations (whinnies, neighs, nickers), body language (ear/eye/tail movement), scent and tactile signals.

- Rolling and playful galloping (especially in young foals)
Interactions with other animals
- Wolves (predator): Wolves may prey upon feral and wild horses, especially foals or weak adults.

- Cattle (in domestic settings) (competitive): Domestic horses may compete with cattle or other livestock for grazing pasture.
