The axolotl is a salamander found naturally in just one place: the canals and wetlands of Lake Xochimilco on the southern edge of Mexico City. It keeps its feathery external gills and aquatic form for life instead of metamorphosing, and it can regrow lost limbs, its tail and parts of its heart and brain, making it a mainstay of regeneration research. Millions live in laboratories and aquariums, but the wild population may be under a thousand and the species is Critically Endangered.

About the Axolotl

Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are extraordinary amphibians native to the ancient lakes and canals of the Valley of Mexico. Famous for their ability to regenerate limbs and even parts of their spinal cord, axolotls are studied worldwide by scientists hoping to unlock the secrets of tissue regeneration. Unlike most salamanders, axolotls exhibit neoteny: they never undergo complete metamorphosis, instead remaining in their aquatic larval form and retaining feathery external gills as adults.

In their natural habitat, wild axolotls were once abundant in the interconnected lakes around Mexico City, but habitat destruction, pollution, and invasive species have left their populations teetering on the brink of extinction in the wild. Today, captive-bred axolotls are popular pets and research animals, but wild populations remain critically threatened.

Physical characteristics

Size: 23–30 cm in length. Weight: 60–250 grams (adults). Lifespan: 10–15 years (captivity), 5–10 years (wild).

Habitat and range

Original range: Lakes and canals of the Valley of Mexico, specifically Lake Xochimilco and (formerly) Lake Chalco.

Current distribution: Now only survives in the canal remnants of Lake Xochimilco, near Mexico City, though millions exist in captive collections worldwide.

Preferred environments: high-altitude freshwater lakes, canals with abundant aquatic vegetation, shallow, cool water, slow-moving or still water bodies

Where to see Axolotl

  • Canals of Lake Xochimilco, Mexico City, Mexico — All year, dry season preferred. Wild axolotls are extremely rare; best opportunity comes with guided ecotours, but most sightings now are of captive or semi-wild individuals kept by conservation projects.

Behavior and diet

Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on small fish, worms, insects, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Social structure: Solitary outside of breeding season; no lasting pair bonds.

Communication: Primarily uses chemical cues and touch; limited visual signals due to poor eyesight.
